Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” (with the lovely Julie Andrews) was created for television and broadcast live in color except in the Pacific time zone where they got the black and white kinescope recording instead. It hasn’t been shown again since that 1957 event which attracted a huge audience. Two remakes were created, one in 1965 with Lesley Ann Warren and another in 1997 with Brandy. PBS’ Great Performances is dusting off the original kinescope and airing it in early December with Ms. Andrews hosting. A DVD is also being released in the same timeframe. New York City Opera’s recent stage production of “Cinderella” dragged in John Epperson, better known as “Lypsinka,” to play the stepmother.
